Colors: risk areas, water and lines

Satellite shows the photo's own water. Pick Flat gray or Dark to set the water color.

Water and line colors are kept separately for Satellite, Flat gray and Dark, so a color picked for one background doesn't carry over to the others.

4Legend and footer

Besides the legend at the top, you can print the words Possible, Greater and Greatest right on the map, inside each colored area. The buttons show what each style looks like.

5City labels

"Major cities (auto)" is the normal setting: the biggest cities inside the risk area. Other presets replace your places, so save them first if you want them back.

City checklist

Tick a city to show it. Ticking switches to "I pick them".

6Your places

Search for a town, then pick the right match. Your places show first and count toward the max.

7Tornado data

The page downloads the newest SPC tornado database on its own and keeps a copy in this browser for 30 days.

Advanced: risk levels and shapes

You can leave these alone. The defaults match The Weather Channel's monthly maps.

The percentages are how often a tornado happened within 25 miles in that month (15% = about 1 year in 7). Smoothing rounds off the edges; "Drop specks" removes risk areas smaller than the size shown (in thousands of square miles).

Refreshing the page (F5 or Ctrl+Shift+R) also starts fresh. Opening the page from a link or bookmark brings back your last settings. Presets you saved are always kept.
